Roger T. Pipe Give us an update. Where is Elegant Angel today?
Patrick Collins Elegant Angel is better in most ways than it has been in a number of years. From the organization of the company to the directors to the diversity of the product, things are very strong. I'm very happy, but I'm not content. Sometimes my directors think that I only see the negative, but that isn't the case. I always point out the positive. Sometimes they don't hear it. I just think that we can always improve. I feel like I know more about my company since it first started. The first year we only did seven productions and I did everything. I knew everything that was going on. As things get bigger you rely on other people and the quality of the product goes down. You start living your life and collecting a check and loose focus. That is what happened to Elegant Angel. It is going to be better from here on. I am focusing on the technical quality and working on the diversity of the product.
Roger T. Pipe What are some of the new projects that you're working on?
Patrick Collins Roscoe Bowltree is back in a POV line. I think that Mike John is the best POV shooter in the business and this won't be anything like his. I get distracted when I get turned on so it will be very real. We are going to have a real high quality tranny line. I haven't released those in a while because the quality I was getting was horrible.
Roger T. Pipe Last year you had both Zupko and Axel Braun shooting features, but you decided to stop that end of production.
Patrick Collins Right. We decided to go back to the basics.
Roger T. Pipe You had very successful features. With Zupko's "Opera" and Axels "Compulsion" you had a ton of awards coming in. It wasn't like you pulled the plug on a floundering aspect of the company.
Patrick Collins The identity of Elegant Angel was at stake. Features don't resonate with me as a pervert. They cost a lot of money and take a lot of time. It isn't a market I was ever focused on. The reason I did it was to try and buy myself some time by generating some revenue from cable. That was very difficult because I didn't understand the market. It was really a matter of re-discovering the identity of Elegant Angel. The original version of "Compulsion" was three and a half hours long. There was no way I was going to release that movie. The final list of edits contained 178 edits and we finished on the last possible day. Something had to change. I went back to what the company was founded on.
Roger T. Pipe So you have no interest in features.
Patrick Collins I would like to do features, but I would like to do features that are on HBO. I've seen some of the stuff they put on cable and they are so bad. I know that I could do better. It's just a matter of time, but it will never again be the focus of what we release.
Roger T. Pipe For years there was a strong foot fetish bend to Elegant Angel movies, but lately you have been focusing on squirting in nearly every release. What is up with that?
Patrick Collins It is the same thing that has always turned me on. It is that moment of truth. Why is the guy's cumshot so important? Because you can't fake it. It's real. We live in a world that is so full of bullshit that this moment of truth is so important. When I see a girl who convulses and wets herself, I love that. When I first saw it I knew that it was special. I saw Cytherea in a movie that had a beautiful set; great lighting and they were shooting the side of her leg. I assumed it had to be faked and I wanted to focus on the squirting. The second time I shot her I included the stuff the fans wanted to see. They wanted to see her drink it so we threw that in there. What appeals to more is when they are fucking and all of a sudden she explodes. That reality is what I love about it.
Roger T. Pipe Is some of it fake?
Patrick Collins A lot of people fake it. I've tasted a lot of it myself. One time I was shooting Cytherea and I did the shot from under the table. It started coming out and it looked yellow. She is so honest that she just told me "That isn't squirt, that's pee." How she does it I don't know. My first wife did it. I didn't know what it was, but I always loved it. What I love about the squirting is that I love the reality of it. I don't do a lot of internal movies.
Roger T. Pipe Why not?
Patrick Collins Most people have to fake those. If the guy doesn't pull his dick nearly out and have a good load you can't really see it. I only do it when a girl is really turned on by it and wants it. When you have stuff like this, people are going to fake it. I hope that the consumer can discern between the real and the fake and not just see so much fake stuff that they stop renting squirting stuff.
Roger T. Pipe I assume that they are successful.
Patrick Collins They have been great sellers, but that isn't why I made them. I hope that the people are as turned on by the look on Tiana Lynn's face as the explosion. In future movies you will see less gynecological focus and more focus on the energy.
Roger T. Pipe You switched distribution deals, what brought that on?
Patrick Collins After all the problems we had with the embezzlement and all I had to decide what I wanted to do. Did I really want to resurrect a brand that was tainted? It would have been easier to form a new company. I am hard headed and didn't want to do that. I talked to Mike at Devil's Films and asked if he wanted to distribute our stuff. That took us back to just being a production company. I don't like the management aspects of the business. You have to do it, but it isn't my strength. In the end that relationship didn't work. There were some issues of content. He didn't want to distribute some of the stuff we were shooting. Everything is settled now and that is why I'm so optimistic. I could have rented a small space and made all of myself catalog. It would have been profitable. Zupko and William came to me and said that it would be wrong to go out like that. If I was going to go out I had to bring Elegant Angel back to where it once was. They were right and I made a commitment to move forward. All of the other drama is behind me and the focus is on the movies.
Roger T. Pipe You have an interesting collection of directors right now. Zupko was a feature guy who has become a gonzo director. How hard was it to rein him in?
Patrick Collins How well do you know Tom?
Roger T. Pipe Pretty well I think.
Patrick Collins He is a mad genius. I have tremendous respect for his mind and his knowledge. It is much more mathematical than I like. He knows before he goes in exactly what positions he wants, how long he wants for each position and the way he wants to light everything. When Pandora Dreams shot her first anal scene I was concerned. She had some issues and I went to the set to make sure everything went smoothly. I had Brian Surewood working on her with a vibrator to make sure she got off. I looked over and Zupko was going nuts. He doesn't care about that he had a schedule to keep. That is the difference between our stuff. He pays attention to the technical aspect, but I am more interested in the heat. I am always making sure that the scene is working for the performers. He couldn't give a shit about that. That doesn't mean that he doesn't make great stuff. When I told him I wasn't doing more features, he said that he couldn't do gonzo. I told him that he could do it if he focused on what turned him on. This is where Big Wet Asses came from. He was trepidations at first, but now he has it down to a system and it is successful. From there I told him to take it beyond his system because he had these great asses, but I wanted to see them for more than half a second. I didn't want to change his movie, but just give the audience a bit more of a lingering look at what he's shooting. It needed to evolve. Tom's potential in gonzo is huge. We all default to what we know so some of the stupid antics and crazy dialog are a fallback position for him. They are a distraction to me as a viewer looking to jerk off. It works for some people, but it needs to evolve. He is very capable and everyone is going to see how great he can be.
Roger T. Pipe What about William H?
Patrick Collins What a character. He's been with me for seven years. Back when I had my own internet division he was scanning pictures for me. He is a big hearted guy who cares a lot about what he does. It has been a long road for William. For a long time he couldn't find his vision. I have had a lot of directors over the years shoot feet because they know I like them, but it doesn't ring true. They don't understand because they are just trying to please me. I told Bill that it had to be what made his dick hard. I think he really hit his stride with Cum Drenched Tits. It is something he likes and I think it is some of the best stuff he's ever shot. Like Tom he has a tendency to do that wacky stuff. I don't want to take away his identity, but I want him to take himself a little more seriously. I know that 2005 will be his year.
Roger T. Pipe And Zakk Wylde?
Patrick Collins He is great. I first met him when he came out of UCLA film school. He was young and new all of the answers. Most people in this business know more about the technical side of the business than I do. I just know what I like. That is all I can say. It didn't work out for us originally. He moved out of state and then he came back. His way of shooting these days is really nice.
Roger T. Pipe What else are you looking for this year?
Patrick Collins Greatness. Elegant Angel is in a precarious position right now and every release needs to be great. We are bringing back the transsexual stuff; I'm traveling and shooting overseas. I am also doing something where the girls masturbate with Doc Johnson toys. These are soft-core girls who are gorgeous and I want to see how far I can go with them. Some of the girls I never touch and others are more willing to play. It's a very different type of thing where you never know what is going to happen. I have always thought it would be nice to put out a movie where you aren't sure if everyone is going to fuck or not.
