Starring: The late Lisa DeLeeuw was best known for her brassy comic roles and that buxom body. But "Mascara" a solid golden oldie from Henri Pachard, gave Lisa one of her meatiest roles as a lonely secretary who longs for the kind of sexual thrills she sees between her boss, R. Bolla, and hooker Lee Caroll. Though there are light moments (like Bobby Astyr in drag), the film works best as a drama about the growing sexual tension between DeLeeuw and Caroll when Lisa's budding desires place her under Lee's spell.
Like the best of Pachard's early work, the characters are rich and screenplay is fully-developed.
While the raicoaters will be disappointed, the sex smolders as Lisa's unravels her libido, first on a blind date, then as a hooker under Lee's tutelage. This is one of the most human porn dramas of the era.
Lee Caroll's blistering, cynical sexuality; Lisa's insecurity (which played against her usual on-screen persona); and the tension sexual between the two.
The scene where Lisa is hired by weirdo Astyr and his dominatrix wife Mistress Canice is too silly and works agains the film's more serious tone.
A 9. For fans of the so-called Golden Age of porn, this is worth hunting down. Lisa DeLeeuw is at her best.
